The students meet two hours before their traditional classes to learn and review reading and writing grammar in preparation for the TOEFL test. Two hours, after their traditional classes, will be spent clarifying new vocabulary learned throughout the day. Conversation and pronunciation are two components that are taught and practiced throughout the day. This focused program will allow the students to master all aspects of the English language in a supportive environment.
Conversation mixes listening and speaking English. This component of the the program is blended into every part of the learning process. This will allow the student to become comfortable with both formal and informal spoken language. Afternoon tutoring focuses on the subject-specific language questions the student will have from the lessons throughout the day.
The reading component includes reading, analysis, and analytical thinking. Novels, newspapers, magazines, and their class books will be used to promote reading in and out of class.
Writing spelling, grammar, and punctuation are very important for school papers and tests. This portion of the program will act as a support to their traditional English class as well as prepare them for college level writing.
The verbal side of English is the most difficult to acquire. This is due to the importance of diction and linguistics. TELS concentrates on pronunciation in addition to conversation in order to give the student the tools he/she will need for everyday communication.
